SulutPos.com, Washington DC – In response to Freedom House and a coalition of civil society partners releasing a list of foreign officials in 15 countries suspected of large-scale corruption or serious human rights abuses, and recommending them for sanction by the United States government, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The Global Magnitsky Act gives the Trump administration an unprecedented opportunity to bring accountability for human rights abuses and significant corruption around the world, actions that all too often go unpunished,” said Michael J. Abramowitz, president of Freedom House.

“We urge the administration to use the powerful leverage provided by the Global Magnitsky Act to sanction the foreign officials identified in this list. Doing so has the potential to defer future abuses, while also demonstrating moral and strategic leadership.”

Background:

The Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act allows the president to deny U.S. visas and freeze U.S.-based assets of human rights abusers and corrupt foreign officials. It also directs the president to consider information from non-governmental organizations when determining who to sanction. Freedom House first convened NGOs in 2016 to organize support for passage of the law. That work has since expanded to include nearly 60 groups working on enforcement of the law and identification of perpetrators.
