SulutPos.com, Washington DC – In response to the military takeover of government in Zimbabwe, and the military placing President Robert Mugabe under house arrest, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“President Mugabe’s long era of misrule is being replaced by something that could be worse for both Zimbabwe and all of southern Africa, which is military rule,” said Jenai Cox, senior program manager for Africa programs at Freedom House. “The military’s rounding up of government officials without action by any court, limiting internet access, and negotiating behind closed doors with factions of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party and  opposition parties undermine rather than strengthen the rule of law and citizens’ fundamental rights. The African Union and SADC should press Zimbabwe’s military and political leaders to adhere to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, immediately work towards restoring civilian rule, and hold elections observed by international monitors.”

Zimbabwe is rated Partly Free in Freedom in the World 2017, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2017, and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2017.
