Release of Myanmar Journalists Comes With a Warning

 

Myanmar’s release of two journalists on Tuesday, who were imprisoned for over 500 days for covering the government crackdown on Rohingya Muslims, came as a welcome surprise for their families and supporters. However, VOA’s Brian Padden reports that free press advocates are skeptical the recent amnesty reflects a significant change to the repressive media environment in Myanmar, a country still in a transition phase from a military dictatorship to electoral democracy.
