Venezuela: Opposition Needs New, Inclusive Strategy

Image: Map of Venezuela., Washington – In response to Venezuela’s National Electoral Council declaration that President Maduro’s United Socialist Party won 17 of 23 governorships in Sunday’s regional elections, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The announced electoral results are inconsistent with the true will of Venezuelan citizens and cast doubt on the possibility for democratic change through only an electoral process, without tighter sanctions, international pressure, and greater inclusiveness by the opposition,” said Carlos Ponce, director of Latin America programs at Freedom House.

“To effect real political change, and combat continued electoral fraud and human rights violations, Venezuela’s opposition urgently needs to develop clear, emphatic proposals that would improve economic and social conditions, and expand its partnerships with civil society organizations, youth, labor unions and other parts of society. If it is to regain the public’s confidence, the opposition should offer voters a meaningful, more inclusive program of change.”

Venezuela is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2017, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2017, and Partly Free in Freedom on the Net 2016.
